Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

Sudden Cardiac Awareness Month

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening emergency that can strike without warning. Every minute counts, and awareness is key to saving lives. October is dedicated to raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, its prevention, and the importance of immediate action.

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart unexpectedly stops beating, cutting off blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age or health history, and is different from a heart attack. If not treated immediately, sudden cardiac arrest can be fatal within minutes.

Signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

  • Sudden collapse or loss of consciousness
  • No pulse or breathing
  • Unresponsiveness to touch or voice

What You Can Do to Help:

  • Learn CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can double or even triple the chance of survival if performed immediately after a cardiac arrest.
  • Use an AED: Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are portable devices that can help restart the heart. Knowing where they are located in public spaces can save lives.
  • Act Fast: If you witness someone collapse and they are unresponsive, immediately call 911, start CPR, and use an AED if available.

Resources for Help & Education:

  • American Heart Association (AHA): www.heart.org for CPR training and resources.
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation: www.sca-aware.org for information on prevention, treatment, and support for those affected by sudden cardiac arrest.
  • Local CPR and AED Training: Many communities offer classes to teach CPR and AED use.

Sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t discriminate, but knowing how to respond can make all the difference. This October, take action by learning CPR, educating yourself about SCA, and spreading awareness. Together, we can save lives.
